Wintertide: An Advent Liturgy

Advent is a special time. It gives us the opportunity to re-focus on the beautiful and often unintentionally lost blessings of the Christmas Season. These blessings come to us through community, family, generosity, tradition, reflection, anticipation and finally celebration. Advent brings intention in a season of chaos and impulsivity.

While many of us have goals and hopes for the Christmas season, we often find ourselves overwhelmed, and come to the end of the holidays feeling empty and unfulfilled. I don’t know about you, but I find that the structure of Advent, its prescription, is keenly effective at re-centering me back on the coming of God in the form of Man, and that a 2000 year old story, full of wonder and lunacy, still has the power to change how I live out my life in relationship with my fellow sojourners of this cold, wintry world. Christmas is about God’s glorious interjection into our messy world to bring peace. It was anticipated for all of humanity, yearned for by generation after generation. In the same way, I anticipate and yearn for that interjection all year long.

And so here is Wintertide: An Advent Liturgy. Along with three original songs, you will find a daily guide for celebrating Advent in a liturgical setting. Sundays are reserved for a more robust liturgy, with the other days of week consisting of shorter settings, with the intention of being practiced at home or in small groups. My desire is to help bring the joy of Advent to an easily accessible format that would help others step back from the chaos and re-connect with the things that make Christmas so special.
